Installing OpenSUSE 10.2 on Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro V3405
Last updated: 2007/07/24
General Hardware Specifications of Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro V3405:
Hardware Components | Status under Linux | Notes |
| Intel Core 2 Duo T5200 | Works | |
| 14.1 WXGA TFT Display | Works | |
| Intel 945GM integrated graphics card | Works | Works with recent drivers |
| 1024MB RAM (2x512 DDR2 533) | Works | |
| 120 GB SATA Hard Drive | Works | |
| Realtek 8139/C/C+ ethernet card | Works | |
| Internal 56k Modem (Motorola SM56) | Seems to work | Connected using Intel HMA. Reports inself as "Motorola Si3054". Seems to work with slmodemd daemon (dialing not tested). |
| Intel PRO 3945ABG WiFi card | Works, but setup is not trivial | This might help: Setup the card using NetworkManager and then run: iwconfig eth1 mode Ad-hoc iwconfig eth1 mode Managed dhclient eth1 |
| DVD+RW | Works | |
| Sound Card | Works | Sometimes (after resume?), the sound output is very quiet even with all mixer components at 100%. |
| Special keys | Doesn't work | Not supported yet by acerhk. Screen brightness controll works (doesn't require software intervention). |
This laptop is operating under Kernel version 2.6.18.
Basic Installation of OpenSUSE:
- Installing - I updated the distribution during installation so that a new graphics card driver is loaded
- Post-Install modifications/tweaks
Setting up additional features for OpenSuSE
- Nothing really interesting here.
Unresolved issues
- Modem dialing has not been tested
- Function keys don't work
- WiFi drops connection (iwconfig eth1 mode Ad-hoc; iwconfig eth1 mode Managed; dhclient eth1 usually fixes that). Improved by upgrading kernel to 2.6.22-rc5.
Configuration Files
- /etc/pm/config
I needed this line (doesn't work in newer kernel 2.6.22 any more):
S2RAM_OPTS="-f"

Looks quite cheap, but nice. The notebook case is rather weak (especially around DVD-drive), so you should not grab the notebook by this part.
Another thing is that it produces a lot of heat, especially from the hard drive (Western Digital). It is very uncomfortable to have it on your legs. I thought notebooks have improved over the last 4 years, but the heat produced by this one is comparable to my old Acer TravelMate 230 (233FX). The heat also shortens the life of the disk, which is not nice.
With power saving features on, the battery can last 3 to 3.5 hours.
